This piece was written for a good
friend of mine who is a big fan of Stevie Wonder.
The piece makes use of two magic set-squares, one of which derives its
row form the Stevie Wonder song Sir Duke.
This is set α, and has 15 elements.
The other set-square, β, is derived from the opening cello
statement, and has 5 elements.
The piece has a tonic of G
shifting to and from G sharp, both linked by a dominant of D. At the beginning
and end of the first section (bar 21), G and D are emphasised as tonic and
dominant, but by the end of the second section (bar 85), G sharp has become the
established tonic. In the final section, G is reaffirmed as tonic.
This end accentuated extended tonality is reflected melodically – the
α row in prime form is exposed by the Cello for the only time in bar 103.
